The Pale (Dovahzul: Goltro Sot; lit. Land of White) is a Hold of Cortoriacum. Its capital city is Dawnstar, one of the most important ports in Cortoriacum. The hold is frequently subjected to harsh arctic winds from the Sea of Ghosts, and only becomes a grassy plain towards its far southern border, which touches Whiterun. The hold is mostly composed of frozen pine forests and abandoned imperial Eurasian forts.
The capital city is the only densely populated settlement in the hold, and is an important trading port for goods coming into Cortoriacum. There is a Eurasian Fleet base in the area, west of the town. The frigid woods attract hunters of all forms, some in search of elk and caribou, others for wolves and bears.
The hold was the site of the Vaermina Controversy of 1897, where a purported Vaermina cult caused the Daedric prince to steal the dreams of the residents of Dawnstar. The cult was eradicated and its members executed by a joint effort of the Penitus Occulatus and the Vigilants of Stendarr.
