St. Paul's Cathedral, officially the Cathedral Church of St. Paul the Apostle, is a cathedral located in the center of Uppsala, Aloia. Operated by the Church of Aloia, St. Paul's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Uppsala, the primate of Aloia. The current archbishop is Martin Sasse.
History
The first cathedral of the Diocese of Uppsala was in Old Uppsala, 5 kilometers to the south of modern Uppsala. The first cathedral was built on the site of an old pagan temple. After a series of floods, the settlers of Uppsala moved onto higher ground to the north. Old Uppsala is now buried under sediment at the mouth of the Nora River. A second cathedral was built in the new city.
Construction of the third, current cathedral began during the reign of Alois I and Victoria I, shortly after the Peace of Halle declared Uppsala to be the new capital. The building was consecrated during the reign of Alois II, in the year 1435. The church was dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle and Saint Erik, the patron saint of Aloia. The Diocese of Uppsala was elevated to the status of archdiocese and head of the province of Aloia. After the Protestant Reformation, the church maintained its position as the seat of the archdiocese and the leader of the new Church of Aloia.
